Arcadia's Thanksgiving Gets Decided Two Weeks Early, Mostly on One Block of Indian School Road

When does an Arcadia Thanksgiving actually start? On the calendar it's Thursday, November 26. In practice, the first local order deadline lands 13 days earlier, the turkey and pie pickups fall on the Tuesday and Wednesday before, and the businesses that handle most of the cooking are a few doors apart near 40th Street and Indian School Road.

With three weeks to go before the holiday, every order window below is still open. Each one closes sooner than the dinner date suggests, and the dates sit close enough together that the sequence matters more than any single choice.

The First Deadline Is November 13

The neighborhood's Thanksgiving calendar works backward from a short list of cutoffs. Here they are in the order they close, with Thanksgiving Day at the end:

  1. Friday, November 13. Last day to pre-order Thanksgiving pies from Pie Snob, as reported in Arcadia News.
  2. Wednesday, November 18. Order deadline for Sierra Bonita Catering's take-and-reheat dinners, per the same column.
  3. Monday, November 23. Arcadia News lists this as the last day to order chef-prepared sides from The Gladly.
  4. Tuesday, November 24, and Wednesday, November 25. Pickup days for Arcadia Meat Market turkeys and Pie Snob pies.
  5. Wednesday, November 25. Pickup for The Gladly's sides and Sierra Bonita's dinners.
  6. Thursday, November 26. Dine-in Thanksgiving along Camelback Road and in Paradise Valley, plus a few Indian School Road spots with their own holiday hours.

Pie closes first, so it shapes the whole plan. Once the pie order is in, the rest of the week is mostly a question of which days you can be on Indian School Road. Pie Snob's own site says Thanksgiving orders go through the website and not by email, so the November 13 deadline means an online checkout.

One Block of Indian School Road Holds the Pickup Run

Pie Snob says its first storefront "was and still is" at 3933 E. Indian School Road. The bakery also has kitchens at 6522 N. 16th St. and in downtown Chandler. Arcadia Meat Market is listed at 3950 E. Indian School Road. That puts the two ends of the meal, turkey and pie, a few doors apart, with pickup on the same two days.

The turkey

Arcadia Meat Market's turkey pre-order page lists Broad Breasted White turkeys from Chiricahua Pasture Raised, raised on pasture with organic feed. The price is $9.50 per pound. A $50 deposit holds the bird, and the page says that deposit is non-refundable, with the rest due at pickup. The size options are:

  • Half bird, 7 to 9 pounds
  • 14 to 17 pounds
  • 17 to 20 pounds
  • 20 to 23 pounds

Pricing by the pound makes the size choice a budget choice. At $9.50 a pound, the gap between the smallest and largest whole-bird ranges is several pounds of turkey, and that difference adds up quickly. Arcadia News also notes the shop carries house-made sides, charcuterie, cheeses and meats for the holiday table at a range of prices. So one stop can cover the bird and the appetizer board.

The pies

Arcadia News lists Pie Snob's pickup window as November 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flavors include apple crumb, caramel apple, green chile apple crumb, chocolate pecan, pumpkin praline, pumpkin cheesecake and a razzleberry double-crust. The bakery's Thanksgiving menu page prices apple crumb at $29, chocolate pecan at $35 and pumpkin cheesecake at $55. Check the total at checkout before counting on a figure.

Since turkey and pie share the same two pickup days and the same block, one trip can cover both. Tuesday the 24th is the less crowded of the two dates on this calendar, because nothing else on it needs a Tuesday pickup.

Wednesday Is When Everything Converges

Wednesday, November 25, is when the separate orders all come due at once. The Gladly, at 2201 E. Camelback Road, has pickup for its holiday sides on Wednesday, November 25. Its online store lists rosemary-sage focaccia at $12, mashed potatoes at $32, stuffing at $34 and gravy at $18. The menu also includes roasted Brussels sprouts, acorn squash and the restaurant's Original Chopped Salad. According to Arcadia News, each side serves four to six.

For a host who would rather reheat the whole meal, Arcadia News reports that Sierra Bonita Catering, at 8522 N. 7th St., offers a $165 take-and-reheat dinner for up to four. It includes off-the-bone roasted turkey with pan gravy, Boursin mashed potatoes, garlic and herb stuffing, a wild mushroom green bean casserole and citrus-cranberry relish. Pickup is Wednesday between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. A sides-only package is $100, and a pumpkin croissant bread pudding is $32. It's the one stop on this list that sits well outside the neighborhood, and its order deadline of November 18 comes five days before The Gladly's.

Put it together and a cook who orders a turkey, pies and sides could need three stops on Wednesday afternoon: Indian School Road, then Camelback Road, possibly with a 7th Street run in between. Picking up the turkey and pies on Tuesday leaves Wednesday with one errand.

Thursday Belongs to the Dining Rooms

On Thanksgiving Day the action moves away from the pickup counters. The places serving full holiday meals on November 26 are mostly east along Camelback Road and in Paradise Valley. On Indian School Road, a brunch spot and a sports bar have their own holiday hours.

Hash Kitchen 4315 E. Indian School Rd. 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., per Arcadia News Seasonal menu

Dirtbag's 4801 E. Indian School Rd. 5 p.m. to close, per Arcadia News Regular menu

The hours in that table line up end to end across the day. Hash Kitchen covers breakfast. Arcadia News reports turkey-and-stuffing waffles, turkey hash and pumpkin pancakes, with the seasonal menu running at all six locations through December. The Phoenician's J&G brunch covers late morning with a carving station, a chilled seafood and raw bar, and sushi. J&G's $80 dinner prix fixe starts with butternut squash soup with oyster mushroom, then roasted turkey with mushroom and chestnut stuffing.

LON's at the Hermosa Inn has the longest window, serving its three-course menu from noon to 8 p.m. Arcadia News lists entrée options including roasted turkey, Chilean sea bass, Wagyu short rib and grilled venison, with desserts including a pecan pie tart, pumpkin cheesecake and apple cider bread pudding. The column notes that reservations are required.

The evening ends back on Indian School Road. Arcadia News reports that Dirtbag's opens at 5 p.m. for the Bills and Chiefs game at 6 p.m. Its Bills Backer Bar will show the game on the big screens, with a full menu of wings, burgers, pizza, chicken nachos, fried zucchini, tots and fries. So a dinner that ends early at home has a place to watch the game a short drive away.

Holiday hours and menus shift. Call ahead before building a day around any single seating. For most of the work, Thanksgiving in Arcadia means a pie order by November 13, a Tuesday or Wednesday pickup at 3933 and 3950 E. Indian School Road, and a Thursday reservation or game on whichever side of the day suits your household.
